HQV Testing:
HD Noise Test: Before turning on the Noise Reduction feature, the XBR8 displayed a good bit of motion artifacts and background flicker with HD signals. After tuning the NR feature on to the Medium setting, there was little discernible background noise.
Video Resolution Loss Test: With the Motion Enhancement feature in the off position, the result was excellent with no movement or false processing in the horizontal or vertical boxes on this LED TV.
Diagonal Filter Test: Light jaggies were apparent in the 3rd bottom bar of the test when nearing the horizontal axis – an average result.
Film Resolution Loss Test: There was movement and dithering in the top right bar quadrant, showing some difficulty with this processing, while the other bars were still – an average result.
Calibration Notes: Right off the assembly line, the Sony 55XBR8 tested fairly close to D6500 when using the Cinema picture mode setting – making this TV easy to calibrate compared to many. The Gamma needed improvement/adjustment. After calibration, the Sony Bravia XBR8 tracked very accurately toD6500 and Gamma improved closer to a standard of 2.2. Measured contrast using the checkerboard test pattern showed an average of 43.25 foot lamberts on the white and 0.19 foot lamberts on the black – calculating to a 230 to 1 contrast ratio. The user controls available on the Sony were intuitive but lengthy when adjusting white balance.
